Technical College Changes Name, Broadens Mission
Published Mar 24, 2006

Central New Mexico Community College is the name of the former Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute.
Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute received an unusual gift for its 40th birthday – namely, a name change.
“A new name will do a better job of conveying what this institution has become over time – that is, a full-service community college,” says Michael Glennon, president. “We have hired a marketing firm to help us with naming options, and our new moniker will be officially announced June 30, 2006.”
That announcement came on schedule, and the new name is Central New Mexico Community College.
CNM is currently New Mexico’s largest community college, with more than 2,000 graduates earning certificates and associate’s degrees each May.
Course offerings include business and information technology, communications, health and engineering.
Besides its main campus in central Albuquerque, CNM has three other sites located in the northeast, northwest and southern portions of the city. There are also plans to expand into northern Rio Rancho in the near future.
The college “is positioning itself for growth to accommodate more and more students,” Glennon says. “Hopefully, that growth will include new campus buildings to go along with our new name.”
